Super Monkey Ball: Sakura Edition (formerly Super Monkey Ball 2: Sakura Edition) is a game that was released for iPad on April 2nd, 2010. It is also on Android and the Windows Phone. It is an expanded re-release of Super Monkey Ball 2, which released just a few months earlier.

This game was later re-released as Super Monkey Ball: Sakura Edition on May 17th, 2018 to app stores as part of Sega's Sega Forever mobile app service. Instead of costing $2.99, it's now a free app with an option to purchase in-game for $1.99 to play without ads.[1] Notably, when playing with ads, an internet connection is required to play the game.

Modes

Main Game

The objective of this game is to tilt the screen to roll the ball across a series of platforms to the goal. Collecting ten bananas will give you an extra life. Collecting all bananas in a level (10 in regular levels, 40 in bonus stages) and clearing the level without losing a life will give you a crown, with a special crown level being unlocked if you get all ten crowns in a level set. Getting a crown in all crown stages will unlock this game's Master difficulty, known as the "ultimate challenge." Falling out or letting the timer reach zero results in a life lost, except in bonus stages. Gameplay is most similar to Super Monkey Ball: Banana Blitz, where the player uses motion controls to navigate levels. However, the jump ability and boss battles are omitted. Unlike other Super Monkey Ball games, monkeys are generally more floaty in this game.

Worlds

There are six worlds total, each with two sets of 10 levels for 20 levels total (excluding Far East, which only has ten levels). Far East is a separate world from the others, put in to show off the "Sakura Edition" of the game, and it won't affect your crowns or progress.

Most of the worlds are based off of worlds from Super Monkey Ball: Banana Blitz, along with music from that game. However, Far East is based off of from Super Monkey Ball: Step & Roll.

  1. Jumble Jungle
  2. Pirates Ocean
  3. Sinking Swamp
  4. Cobalt Caverns
  5. Ultra Heaven

Trivia

  • Oddly, the Pirates Ocean world uses the music from Monkey Island.
  • The Monkey Island and Ultra Heaven themes appear to have been (somewhat poorly) edited to loop differently in this game than they do in Banana Blitz. Additionally, the Far East theme has been noticeably shortened, likely due to the original song being very long to allow for each stage in Step & Roll to play a different segment of the song on loop.
  • The highest score that can be obtained in this game is 999,999, as the score counter will cap at this point. This score can be obtained in quick play, though no record of the score is kept.
