Monkey Race is a Party Game in Super Monkey Ball 3D.

Gameplay

Monkey Race, unlike previous iterations, is played in a manner similar to Nintendo's Mario Kart franchise. The player selects their monkey and the kart they wish to drive then are sent to the menu. In-game, players can attack the other karts by using items, which are obtained by driving through Item Gates. Alternatively, if the player drives behind an opponent, they'll perform a draft, which increases their kart's speed as long as they are behind them.

Players can also drift by pressing the R Button when they turn their kart hard enough. When their kart turns red, they must release the R Button to get a powerful Dash.

There are three modes to choose from:

  • Grand Prix: The main mode of Monkey Race. The player is tasked with competing against seven AI-controlled karts across three circuits. The player with the most points wins.
  • Quick Race: A three-lap race on a chosen track.
  • Time Trial: Players are tasked with setting the best record on the track of their choice.

Items

  • Coconut Bomb: Allows the user to lob a coconut that explodes when it hits the ground. Other racers caught within the blast radius will spin out.
  • Banana Peel: Causes a Monkey's kart to spin out when touched.
  • Ice Cube: Allows the player to throw three ice cubes in different directions, freezing anyone it touches.
  • Gravity Shot: Makes the opponent come to a complete stop and renders them unable to move for a few moments.
  • 3D Glasses: Gives players ahead of the user a pair of 3D glasses, temporarily obscuring their view.
  • Disco Ball: Makes players ahead of the user spin uncontrollably for a few moments.
  • Power Boost: Gives the player a temporary, but powerful burst of speed. In the Time Trial mode, the player starts out with this item.
  • Super Bumper: Prevents the player from losing speed when they bump into walls or obstacles.
  • Typhoon: A tornado that forms around the user's kart, deflecting items and sending players who get too close for a spin.
  • Super Monkey Ball: Turns the user's kart into a giant Monkey Ball that bowls along the track, knocking aside any racer who gets too close.

Controls

  • +Control Pad or Circle Pad - Steer
  • A Button - Accelerate
  • B Button - Brake/Reverse

Tracks

Track name Difficulty Track theme Description Track image
Monkey Park ★☆☆ Amusement park Three simple courses that teach the player how to play Monkey Race. The first track introduces players to giant curves, the second introduces ball pits and moving course obstacles, and the third track has water that overflows a portion of the course, slowing down players that drive through.
Mt. Tyrano ★★☆ Rugged mountain A rugged mountain in an arid canyon where the tracks are lined with fossils that slow players down. Players must also be careful of the sudden ups and downs.
Sky-way ★★★ Urban city Players race across a highway suspended high in the sky, but there are places where the road is still under construction.
